Offers First Managed Service for Synced Mobile Data for SMEs

The Conrad Hotel, Dublin, Ireland, Tuesday April 28, 2009…. Central Data Bank, (CDB), Ireland’s leading channel exclusive B2B utility online offsite backup service provider and Funambol, the leading provider of mobile cloud sync and push email, today announced a partnership to bring Funambol’s innovative sync and backup service to Ireland. The partnership allows CDB to be the first managed service provider for mobile phone data in Ireland. As a result, CBD is able to wirelessly sync PIM data, between billions of mobile phones, the Internet cloud, and desktop apps.

“There is nothing to compare with the Funambol service in Ireland today. This is truly a unique service,” says Dermot Mooney, managing director of CDB. “Mobile phone users, of all hues, can wirelessly sync their data, from SIM card and from the phone itself, onto an online service. Once registered, it only takes seconds to sync the phone and it is done without any cables. No one keeps phone cables anymore and most people save their data on a mixture of SIM and phone. These are the first two operational problems associated with mobile data capture solved in one fell swoop.”

“We are applying the same rules to this service as we apply to our online off site back service” says Mooney. Funambol from CDB is hardware and operator agnostic. Set it up on your old phone, backup your data and then set it up on the new phone and restore onto a new phone, all without having to go near a PC.

CBD offers it service lines exclusively through the reseller channel and specialist trade verticals of more than 45 IT companies across Ireland and overseas. In this role, companies have sought a solution for their mobile phone data and CDB researched all product offerings until he came across Funambol. “This over the air (OTA) service from Funambol is of the highest quality and matches our professional online backup service,” says Mooney. “We expect to have more than 50,000 handsets backed up for business clients by the end of 2009 in Ireland during this phase.”

Other equally compelling reasons for reluctance to backup mobile data online have traditionally been cost, security and reliability. The partnership between CDB and Funambol can now offer an affordable, secure service that is reliable. “We are offering a business-2-business service though our growing reseller network,” explains Mooney. “This service is aimed at professionals and is offered with full Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and a properly developed infrastructure to provide online backup. It is a robust and cost effective solution to the perennial thorny issue of mobile phone data backup.”

Once users have registered with the CDB service, their data is protected and secure, regardless of what happens to the user’s phone or SIM card. If they lose or damage the mobile component, they can still access the same saved data using a newly purchased phone or they can log into the web portal and view and or modify their phone data. It is a foolproof method of securing their mobile data.

So for less than .10c per day you can protect the content on your mobile phone for this unique service. Along with our current resellers partner we are in discussions with a number of Mobile Reseller partners in Ireland and overseas. Today we are announcing our first service agreements with a number mobile reseller partners in Ireland;

Allstat Corporate Solutions, Dublin, Ireland: 01 867 2233

Commercial Wireless, Dublin, Ireland: 01 293 2600

Fones Direct, Dublin Ireland: 1850 700 007

Christian Marsch, Funambol Vice President, also expressed his satisfaction with the new partnership. “For businesses, the security and reliability of mobile data is as important as the service itself. By partnering with CDB, we can offer this extra step, this extra layer of service which is vital for businesses, large and small. They cannot afford not to backup mobile data but they also cannot afford to have it compromised.”

Funambol’s open source-based solution provides the industry’s broadest mobile device compatibility. Its open source software is backed by the world’s largest cross-platform mobile developer community, who helps test Funambol software on thousands of smart and feature phones. Funambol open source can be downloaded and freely used for internal projects, as well as rapidly translated into different languages and adapted for the latest mobile devices.

Dublin, Ireland, 8th September 2008. Irish online backup services company Central Databank has partnered with the ISV (Independent Software Vendor) Shortcuts Software, expanding the company’s services to over 10,000 customers across the globe. On full deployment, the partnership will bring global gross revenues for Central Databank to over €1m.

Shortcuts head office is based in Brisbane, Australia with two further offices located in Sale, Cheshire (UK) and Long Beach, California (USA) respectively. Shortcuts is the world’s leading provider of business management software solutions to hair and beauty salons and spas across the globe, currently operating in over 10,000 sites.

Irish company Central Databank (CDB) is a specialist online backup service provider offering services exclusively through IT reseller and ISV channel partners. CDB in conjunction with Shortcuts will establish additional data sites in Mainland Europe, Australia and North America.

“CDB provides a number of service offers in the back up sector to include mobile back up, enterprise back up and data replication services. We enable IT providers to become active, providing all the infrastructure, training and support needed. The CDB Sales Partner gets into the back up service provision business overnight without the necessary capital expenditure required. They in turn sell the back up to their clients,” says Dermot Mooney, CEO of CDB.

Online backup provides customers with robust effective off-site storage and back up of all their critical business data. CDB’s service is totally automatic and monitored 24/7 by specialist staff. CDB has built a unique service position.

“Our utility model is very different to any model in the market to date. It is harder to execute. We provide Sales Partner with all the infrastructure to enable them to deliver a top class service to their customer for critical data on their network on their laptop and even on their smart phone and PDAs,” adds Mooney.

“Our motto is global service for local delivery. This particular partnership has allowed us to reach customers spread over three continents, even though CDB are an Irish-based company. This deployment along with others planned will allow CDB accelerate multi regional sites while managed from Dublin. That is what makes it unique,” commented Mike Sowden, Chief Executive Officer of Shortcuts Software (UK) Ltd.

“The online back-up solution, supplied by CDB, for our clients is just part of our on-going commitment to providing the best in class software and service to the hair and beauty industry.
Speaking at the launch of their new product offering, Howard Beggs, CEO of Helix Health and Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist said, “Given the sensitivity of health related records, we at Helix Health understand that data protection is of particular importance to health care professionals. Over the years we have had incidents where customers, with the best of intentions while using traditional back up methods, have lost significant data through disasters such as fire or IT failures. We are confident that together with a leading technology innovator such as CDB we can offer Healthcare professionals a value added service and peace of mind.”

Central Databank’s primary storage service centre is based in Dublin with full monitoring and reporting offered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The service will enable users to protect their patient data including any scans, results and images in an offsite location without having to run lengthy daily backups and worry about holding multiple tapes or other backup media in another location.

Dermot Mooney, CEO of Central Databank believes that there is an onus on Medical Practitioners to protect their data. “In light of recent data security breaches in professional sectors leaving customers exposed to identity fraud and given the strong ethical obligations imposed on health professionals in relation to their patients, it is vital that practitioners in this sector take the utmost measures to ensure that their data is both secure and protected”
Central Databank and Helix Health aim to ensure consistent protection and availability of crucial patient records by facilitating rapid recovery from an emergency, such as computer failure, virus infection, flood or fire which could result in the destruction of the original data.

About Helix Health

Helix Health is a leading provider of world-class healthcare software and IT solutions. The company was formed in 2007 as a result of a merger between Systems Solutions (leading provider of pharmacy management software) and Medicom (market leader in general practice systems), creating the largest indigenous healthcare IT provider in Ireland. With a combined customer base of over 10,000 users of its healthcare software offerings, the company provides innovative technology solutions to Primary Care, Pharmacy, Specialist Health Care and Private Consultants, Health Assessment and Government.

We believe that digital consumers aren’t interested in data storage – yet. And we’ll help you help them get there!

People want to seamless service that provides value – just like electricity

We believe that people will rapidly start to choose their storage providers based on how they (and their family members) access and use their digital belongings. The way forward for the consumer is a combination of hardware (local hard drives and NAS, which have to be plug & play) and services, with seamless interfaces – which consumers will choose based on their usage (taking into account technological limitations – which will evolve over time). For example: people who want to share their family pictures will respond positively to an offer of online storage with the right interface, such as Google’s Picasa (or own our Central DataBank PhotoSafe offer), or could also take advantage of the storage capacities of services such as iFlick or MySpace. Within that scenario, people are buying storage without actually choosing to buy storage; rather they buy simplicity of use and the ability to share seamlessly. Same with MP3s that people might end-up storing with their providers of digital music.

We believe that things will change when people start realising that they have indeed spent money amassing digital capital over the years, which they would hate losing – and hence need “protecting”. When this time comes (we’re not there yet), digital consumers will surely be willing to pay for digital archiving services or tools. Within that scenario, people want to store away stuff that could come in handy in case of fire or loss of their physical hardware. It’s a bit like insurance: you don’t start looking to purchase a policy until it is either forced on you (we’re not there yet either) or you’ve experienced such a loss that you don’t want to take any chances anymore.

Help them organise their data – and they’ll adopt storage

We believe that the average PC user’s first problem is “how do I organise my data”. The logical, normal, accepted way is to rely on folders and subfolders. Some are trying to do away with this traditional approach and rely on indexing and search. At this stage none of the available services or software are really convincing – but no doubt that will change as the largest players (Google and Microsoft to name just a few) are working on it.

However, we don’t believe that anybody is really trying to put together a simple-to-use tool that would sit on the user’s PC and actually him/her get their files organise. All their files, not just MP3s (which you can do today) or pictures (same), but all their files – again, based on their own way of doing things. We at CDB believe that helping users organise their data and “improve their digital experience” is the key to selling them other services – starting with data storage in the background. That’s why we are currently putting together the specs for such as tool, through primary research and interviews, and partnerships with larger industry players.

Think of online backup as electricity

Online storage is now available to all consumers with a broadband connection to the Internet. Pretty much all file types can be easily and safely stored on a remote server – including videos and films in the right set up.

Today’s consumer view of online backup is that it’s still a bit technical and still a bit too expensive. We agree on the “expensive” bit, and we think prices will fall sharply, particularly in the consumer space. However, that’s what people were saying a hundred years ago about electricity. Today nobody thinks twice about switching on a light, and electricity is both ubiquitous and a very big business.

So we at CDB are working on turning online storage and backup into a utility: as simple as switching on a light, inexpensive (or all-you-can-eat packages) and enabling a whole lot of new access services which will make consumer’s life easier.
